I don’t need a lawyer.
So, you talked to the insurance adjuster and they said to just send them the bills? That they would pay them? Remember that the insurance adjuster’s job is to pay out as little money on claims as possible. They rush people to accept a little money now before the true extent of one’s injuries are known. There are many things that lawyers know that maximize your recovery. The adjuster is the insurance company’s representative – you need someone representing you. The insurance company does not want to spend money fighting a lawsuit. This motivates them to pay more to settle the claim and get rid of that possibility. A person who represents themselves does not have that kind of leverage.
I can get a lawyer later if I need one.
This is technically true, but not optimal for your claim. Evidence disappears over time. Audio and videotapes that may be critical get recycled if not obtained quickly. Witnesses move away or change their phone number. Bruises fade. Adjusters get you to say something damaging in a recorded statement. It’s best to have legal advice from the beginning. Why wait?
I can’t afford a lawyer.
You will be paying your lawyer on a contingency basis, which is a percentage of the settlement they obtain for you. This motivates your legal team to get the most they can for you! Even if no recovery is made, you will never get a bill or write a check for legal fees.
The bottom line is, a study conducted by the Insurance Research Counsel suggests people who have suffered bodily injuries in an auto accident win 3.5 times more in settlement compensation while represented by an attorney than injury victims who don’t hire a personal injury attorney.
